Clutches

Clutch pressure plate

The clutch pressure plate transfers the engine torque to the transmission input shaft via the clutch disc. The diaphragm spring clutch superseded coil springs in the car sector in the 1970s. Since then, a slatted diaphragm spring has produced the contact pressure which transfers the engine torque. The diaphragm spring has tangible benefits for the driver, who now only needs to apply minimum pedal force due to the lower release load.

In 1986, LuK became the first clutch manufacturer to launch the self-adjusting clutch (SAC). It continuously measures increases in release load in the event of cumulative wear and compensates for the reduced thickness of the facing material in a targeted manner.

Advantages of the LuK diaphragm spring clutch

  • the diaphragm spring is resistant to high speeds
  • the theoretical life span of a diaphragm spring is infinitely high
  • low release loads compared to a coil spring clutch (comfort)
  • fewer individual components compared to a coil spring clutch
